HISTORYa: After 24 years, the Philippines will soon have a second saint after the Vatican announced that Blessed Pedro Calungsod of Cebu will be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church.
Calungsod follows in the footsteps of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, who was elevated to sainthood in 1987.
According to Vatican’s news site, Pope Benedict XVI has officially approved the promulgation of decrees for canonization of Calungsod and six others who have been said to have performed miracles. The actual date of the canonization rites has yet to be announced.
